Maison Chapoutier can trace their history back to 1808, rare masters of both the Northern and Southern Rhône they have now spread their wings across not just France but the globe. The current Chapoutier at the helm is Michel who took over in 1990, immediately implementing his belief in biodynamic cultivation. It was Michel who in 2000, after a six year search, established Domaine de Bila-Haut in the Cotes du Roussillon commune of Latour de France very close to the border with Spain.
The steep pebbly vineyard of Occultum Lapidem located on the slopes of the high Agly Valley is highly reminiscent of many in the Northern Rhône. The grape varietals planted of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre further echo the Chapoutier ‘home’ vineyards. The Roussillon area was made for Michel Chapoutier who despite the size of his production, has an unwavering commitment to quality;
This wine is generous on the nose, round and textured on the palate leading onto elegance on the finish. Rich black fruits mingle with cassis and savoury spice. A powerfully bodied wine yet remaining perfectly balanced.
