Fattoria Cigliano di Sopra is located in the northernmost part of the Chianti Classico region, specifically in the hamlet of Cigliano in the municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa. The farm’s thirty-two hectares include seven hectares of vineyards, which produce the estate’s wines, and 17 hectares of olive groves, which produce its extra virgin olive oil. The remaining eight hectares are parks and woodlands. The historic villa within the farm’s grounds is inhabited by the owners, who devote themselves to caring for and preserving the historic complex.
Matteo Vaccari and Maddalena Fucile are two young winemakers with extensive experience in Tuscany and beyond. After graduating in Viticulture and Enology from the University of Florence in 2017, the duo honed their winemaking techniques at Tenuta degli Dei, Fontodi e Isole e Olena in Tuscany. They then both traveled to America to work with two of California’s top winemakers, Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr, at their California and Oregon estates, Domaine de la Cote, Sandhi, Pence Ranch, and Evening Land. Eventually, Maddalena returned to the family estate, Cigliano di Sopra, in northern Chianti, where she and Matteo restored the estate’s old vineyards through organic and biodynamic farming. Today, they cultivate seven hectares on limestone-rich sandy-clay soils. All the fruit is hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in oak.
Fattoria Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico 2022 displays notes of pomegranate, cherry, and black cherry, yet slightly earthy. It’s dry on the palate, with intense and elegant tannins.
