Johan Reyneke began his winemaking journey as a labourer in small vineyards owned by his neighbours in Stellenbosch. As the vineyards were too small to sustain a profitable business, Johan was allowed to take over the vineyards and, after combining with those owned by his parents, he started selling grapes to wineries and eventually progressed to making his own wines.
He focused solely on organic and biodynamic farming practices, a move that has rewarded him. Johan is now credited as the pioneer of the organic and biodynamic winemaking movement in South Africa. Reyneke is one out of only 2 South African producers who possess both organic and biodynamic certification today.
The Reserve range consists of wines that are only produce in very special vintages. These wines are typically made from small pockets of grapes from the very best vineyard sites. The maturity of the vineyards is reflected in the depth, elegance and structure of this range. The Syrah grapes are selected from a southerly facing vineyard on the property. Here the soils are slightly shallower and the vineyard yields grapes with thicker skins and intense concentration.
